The cornerstones of this concert are two absolute masterpieces from the horror years of 1939-1940. Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps was written and created in the Görlitz POW camp while Pavel Haas, in harrowing circumstances, finished his poignant opus 17 in Theresienstadt.
Sándor Veress and Felix Mendelssohn, both strictly forbidden and considered degenerate during Nazism, are represented with lesser known but important orchestral pages.
