There was a new piece of music at number one in Klara’s Top 100 in 2021, toppling Johann Sebastian Bach from the top of the list after many years. This year, it was the 86-year-old Estonian composer Arvo Pärt who took first place with the composition Spiegel im Spiegel. His work clearly strikes a chord with the general public. The words stillness and spirituality often crop up in contemplations of his music. These are ideas that also apply to three masterly compositions for strings (plus harp and percussion): Silouan’s Song, Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten and Festina Lente. They form a blazing programme that seems to mirror silence.
